The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi Organises Multiple Cultural Events for Al Ain Region

he Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has organised a series of cultural events in Al Ain Region for December which combine multiple events including cinematic screenings and field trips to various historical and cultural sites. The programme will include the returning Al Qattara Cinema Programme, the Travel Through Our Traditions programme, the My Old House initiative and the Weekends at the Oasis event.

Al Qattara Cinema
The third edition of the Al Qattara Cinema Programme will take place on Friday, December 14th at Al Qattara Arts Centre, with a screening of the short film Mare Nostrum, directed by Rana Kazkaz and Anas Khalaf and a screening of Theeb, by Naji Abu Nowar.

The film ‘Theeb, Jordan’ follows the story of a young Bedouin boy who escapes his home when bandits attack his tribe and embarks on a perilous coming-of-age journey. The film takes place in Wadi Rum during World War I, in the wake of the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire and the heightening political situation in the region. The film was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars in 2016, and has been shown at several international festivals around the world.

‘Mare Nostrum, Syria’ tells the tragic stories of refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, to flee wars and destruction in their home countries, and seek a better life in Europe, despite putting their lives in danger.

The Al Qattara Cinema Programme provides a cinematic platform that celebrates UAE and Arab film-makers, bringing them closer to the audience, giving new options to viewers, and activating the role of Al Qattara Arts Centre as a link between the local community and art. The programme is free and open to audiences over 10 years old.

Travel Through Our Traditions
The cultural programme also includes a tour as part of the Travel Through Our Traditions programme on Saturday, December 15th, which provides participants with an immersive cultural experience that will introduce them to the daily agricultural practices and traditions in the Al Ain Region.
