Bait Al Gahwa Launches New Comprehensive Training Programme Around Gahwa-making Culture

A new training programme detailing the practice and heritage of Arabic coffee-making has been officially inaugurated by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), at a special launch ceremony led by HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, and HE Saood AlHosani, Undersecretary at DCT Abu Dhabi.

The Bait Al Gahwa, which translates as ‘House of Gahwa (Arabic coffee)’, Training and Certification Programme aims to ensure that the tradition is passed on and preserved for future generations. The Programme will include nine modules that cover all aspects of the heritage, history and science of Gahwa, with the initiative aligning with DCT Abu Dhabi’s mandate to protect, preserve and promote the heritage of the emirate. The initiative will take place at the House of Artisans within Qasr Al Hosn.

“We are committed to Abu Dhabi's vision of preserving cultural heritage, and this focus is even more important as the UAE celebrates its 50th year, this documentation of our heritage for transmission to future generations, as an expression of their cultural identity and pride,” said HE Al Mubarak. “Through the inauguration of this specialised training programme, we have taken the heritage of Gahwa to the next level of transmission and dissemination that will allow us to showcase our culture proudly to the world. Gahwa is an embodiment of Emirati ideals of hospitality and generosity well preserved through its customs, traditions and authenticity.”

The Programme’s curriculum was created following consultations with renowned Gahwa heritage experts from across the UAE and Emirati specialty coffee expert and onsite partner Espresso Lab, and will include theory and practice, audio-visual materials and practical modules, that together will provide an exhaustive overview of Gahwa culture. The training centre is on the 1st floor of House of Artisans at the Al Hosn Site.

The Bait Al Gahwa Training and Certification Programme will also offer informal training for government agencies and the private sector as well as workshops for universities and schools. A licensing system has also been developed in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development, presenting an opportunity for any certified operator from Bait Al Gahwa to issue a commercial licence under the ‘Bait Al Gahwa’ activity.
